Studio, Lifestyle Or Outdoor Photography? What to choose for your family portrait session, in Bristol, Portishead

When it comes to getting your portrait taken, you have the option of choosing between studio, in-home studio, in-home lifestyle and outdoor photography. Each option offers its unique advantages, and understanding the differences between them can help you make the right decision for your family portrait session. In this blog post, I will explain these types of family sessions so you can decide which option is more suitable for your family.

WHAT TYPE OF FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION DOES BERNADETTE PHOTOGRAPHY OFFER?

If you are a client of mine and have known me from the beginning, ( from around 2014…) you know I have done many studio sessions for several years. The shift to outdoor photography happened in 2020 and it was influenced by the challenges and restrictions brought about by lockdowns. Clients preferred outdoor sessions due to the open space, fresh air, and relaxed atmosphere so I stopped doing studio sessions for a while. It was only in 2022 when some of my clients asked me to do some studio or lifestyle portraits for them and encouraged me to do them in their home.

So I decided to offer In-Home studio and In-Home lifestyle settings, mainly during in the colder months when outdoor photography is not an option due to the weather and season..

What is In-home Studio / In-Home Lifestyle/ and Outdoor session?

STUDIO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION

Studio photography is a specialized form of photography that takes place in a controlled setting, typically in a studio or your home. This controlled environment allows me to have complete control over the lighting, background, and other elements to create specific looks and moods. By manipulating the lighting and background, I can achieve the desired atmosphere and aesthetic for the photoshoot. The resulting studio portraits often feature clean, solid backgrounds, putting the primary focus on the subject. In-home studio photography is similar to studio photography but takes place in the client’s home.

HOW DOES IN-HOME STUDIO SESSION WORK?

The session lasts around 90-120 Minutes minutes, including setup time. I bring small backgrounds, a background stand, my two Elinchrom studio lighting, and props as needed. This session works well for various types of portraits, including birthday sessions, child portraits, corporate headshots, and fashion photos.

IN-HOME LIFESTYLE FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION

In-home Lifestyle photography -on the other hand – is more natural than studio. Instead of using any backgrounds and studio lights, in-home lifestyle photography allows us to capture authentic moments in the client’s surroundings: whether it’s the kitchen, front room, or bedroom. We capture the magic in your home. As I rely on natural lights for these sessions, the rooms with the most natural light are the best for an in-home lifestyle session.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR IN-HOME LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

The session typically lasts around 60-90 minutes, with limited or no posing, focusing on capturing real moments and the connection between family members. I take photos of all the smiles and cuddles and those beautiful raw moments of your family life. You can even stay in your pyjamas all day if you want, I will capture every special moment as they are. It’s all about REAL moments and the CONNECTION between the family.

OUTDOOR FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

Outdoor photography brings out the natural colours and lighting, making your photos come alive with a unique touch. Instead of being confined to a studio backdrop, outdoor photography allows for a variety of natural backdrops that can enhance the storytelling aspect of your photos. One of the great things about outdoor photography is the freedom to choose a location that holds special meaning for you and your family. Whether it’s a favourite park, a scenic overlook, or even your backyard, the personal connection to the location can add depth and sentiment to your family portraits. Outdoor photography takes advantage of natural light and settings to create a more organic and spontaneous feel. The use of natural light can result in softer, more flattering images, and the variety of outdoor backdrops can add depth and interest to the photographs.

HOW DOES AN OUTDOOR SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Family Outdoor portrait sessions often capture genuine emotions and interactions, as the subjects have the freedom to move about and express themselves in a more relaxed setting. The session usually lasts around 60-90 Minutes. TThe Family photoshoot can be undertaken on location at the park, at the beach, in the woods, or wherever you feel comfortable. There’s nothing quite like a bit of natural light and fresh air to add extra vitality to your pictures. Furthermore, there are endless locations that make a stunning backdrop. Read more here about what to expect on the session.

What is the difference between In-Home Studio / In-Home Lifestyle session / and Outdoor Session?

Family portrait session in Portishead, Bristol North Somerset area

Studio sessions on a variety of textures of backgrounds and studio props. Lifestyle sessions capture you and your family in the rooms that are sentimental to you.
The difference between studio and outdoor portrait photography is the level of control over the environment. In a studio, the photographer has complete control over the lighting, temperature, and other environmental factors. Outdoor sessions, on the other hand, are subject to the elements and natural conditions, which can add an element of unpredictability and adventure to the photoshoot.

Family portrait sessions – timeless portraits
no matter the location

The choice between studio and outdoor family portrait photography depends on the look and feel you want to achieve in your portraits. If you prefer a more formal and controlled setting, studio photography may be the best option for you. However, if you’re looking for a more natural and spontaneous vibe with a variety of backdrops, then outdoor photography might be the way to go. And if you are looking for raw, natural, authentic moments captured in the comfort of your home, then an In-home life style portrait session may be the best option.

Both in-home and outdoor portrait photography have their own merits, and the decision ultimately comes down to personal preference and the specific aesthetic you want to capture in your portraits. Whichever option you choose, the most important thing is I will make sure to bring your vision to life and create beautiful, timeless portraits that you and your loved ones will cherish for years to come.
