Storytelling Photography for Kids and Families: Muddy Boots and Memories

Adventures at Bristol Abbot’s Pool

The magic of childhood

Being a child means muddy hands and dirty boots, splashing through puddles without hesitation. Their pockets fill with tiny treasures—smooth pebbles, curled-up leaves, a feather they’re sure must have belonged to a magical bird. There’s always more climbing to do, more places to explore, more questions to ask.

Venturing into the Wild

The other day, we explored Bristol Abbot’s Pool to learn more about pond life. My daughter and her friends were off as soon as we arrived, running through the trees, climbing over logs.. They crouched at the water’s edge, peering in, scanning the surface for signs of life.

There was no hesitation, no second-guessing—just curiosity leading the way.

Capturing the In-Between Moments

I love these days. The ones spent outside, where time slows just enough to see things more clearly. It’s not just about the big moments – the running, the splashing, the discoveries -but the small ones too.

The way they lean in closer to get a better look. The quiet focus as they scoop up pond water, careful not to disturb whatever might be hiding beneath the surface. The way their faces light up when they find something -even if they don’t know exactly what it is. The small hands reaching for a fallen leaf, the way the sunlight catches in their hair as they run.

Between their laughter and endless questions, I took the chance to capture some nature shots. The delicate veins of a leaf, the shimmer of water droplets, the tiny world beneath the pond’s surface… It’s a reminder that wonder exists everywhere – sometimes, we just have to slow down enough to notice it.

Storytelling Photography in Portishead, Bristol: Holding Onto the Small Moments

Photography, for me, is about preserving these moments—the muddy boots, the windblown hair, the tiny hands reaching for something new. Storytelling photography in Portishead, Bristol isn’t about perfect poses or forced smiles; it’s about capturing the feeling of being there.. The messy, joyful, curious nature of childhood.

Because one day, their boots won’t be quite as muddy. Their pockets won’t always be stuffed with tiny treasures. Their questions will change, their steps a little more certain.

But not today.

Today, they are wild and free, running through the woods, knee-deep in adventure—exactly as childhood should be.  And if we’re lucky, maybe that sense of adventure never really fades.

Loosing track of time in a world that still has so much to show us.
